Socially anxious people often engage in safety-behaviors in order to gain some sense of security in the feared social situations. A person afraid of sweating might wear an extra layer of clothes to cover sweat spots on the shirt. Ironically, safety behaviors often provoke the exact same thing they intent to avoid.
